DSDN101 Project 3 Standpoint

Nowadays, the world has been changing quickly accompanying with rapid technology development. Especially by the development of the new technology, new product and new function. It is very important for students to keep pace with the technology and fully understand the changeable of digital era. And I believe media design, as ‘a new way of seeing’,transfer our visual sense between virtual and real freely.

The success of Avatar is a digital media innovation milestone. It directed by American famous director James Cameron, he used virtual camera system to direct the motion-capture filmmaking. He described the system as a “form of pure creation where if you want to move a tree or a mountain or the sky or change the time of day, you have complete control over the elements.” (Warren, 2005) People like sensational and visual impact. Although wire is strong, useless and ugly are the first thing come into people mind. The wireman is my main character. It was given life in my 30-40 seconds animation. The performance of the animation technique tried to though different actions such as emotion, jumping, running and any other personification actions to express it also flexible. It represents that by the digital technology we can change things features if we want.

Film making should give the strong feeling or impression to an audience, then has struck a responsive chord in the hearts of them. Although avatar is an epic science fiction film, it cannot success without the plot. No matter how virtual it is, its plot constitutes a picture of life of human beings. All illusory come from reality. Similar to the wire restored it essence in the end of my animation, it cannot disconnected from reality. Therefore, Wireman is not just the main character. It is a symbol which organic combination of virtual world and real world.

Group work II progress

This is the first original idea we start on monday. We draw these on the white board and make it in the stop motion animation.

Milk audio progress

DSDN101 Group Work 2

“Milk Audio” is a sound recording company and the aim of our flash animation was to both correlate effectively and efficiently with our poster we had made in task 1. We hoped to reiterate the branding of our company by simply adding animation to the current features of our poster. This was to establish ‘milk audio’ as an easily recognizable recording company synonymous with great music production. Again we used the slogan “Get On The Milky Way” as it talks to the audience and gives instruction while still remaining current with the company’s name “Milk Audio.” Although we both inverted the colour scheme to slightly differentiate from our original poster and introduced music to play alongside the animation. The music we chose was a remix of French musician Sophie Marceau featuring  Humming Urban Studio, a South Korean electro-pop band, to emphasis subtly the company’s international audience and influence in international pop culture. Not to mention to highlight the possibilities of artist collaborations and remixing while signed and recording with “Milk Audio.” Our animation hopes to incorporate efficient “Milk Audio” branding and appeal to a greater international audience.

Draft storyboard

Here is my pencil draft idea i have plan for my vedio concept about. 'A new media connect people to virtual world.'(But i will change it in the future and make the sentence more sense) The story is around the virtual and reality. The stick man has come out the drawing paper. Then it starts a new life. However it just make things worse, it  make trouble on the creater's table. Then when the creater come back try to catch it, it start escaping. Finally the creater make it into a roll of wire.

From the bottom of the picture: the human elbow range of motion is typically 150°. But that just the some representive to our work. My model will be a abstract joint model.

Stop motion sample

Here is one of sample individual work i made for the DSDN101

I intend my clip to base around the idea - 'a new way of seeing', the inspiration is from my brainstorm around 'Media design' the feature of the post-production.

The relationship between the reality and virtual.  The stick man is on the paper from that sample vedio.  But later for my final work and storyboard, my idea is trying to make it into real one. The sample vedio is 24fps for 6s so actually i take nearly 120 pictures for this short vedio, probably later for the stop motion i need to consider about several points to improve.

  • Make the vedio more clearly, this one become 480p during export time.
  • More lightness for the work space.
  • Give more interesting sound.

Some inspiration for the project

Link to the image

Up two of storyboards is coming from the Chinese film name is Nanjing! Nanjing!
The imdb link is tt112405

That would be every good impression storyboard for the film. The black and white color show the striking contrast for the story. It also represent different camera angel.Really good example!

For the bottom of the storyboard. It also emphasis on the same idea from the first one. Using arrow probably for the good movement. The text on the right-hand side give the self-explanation. And the capital letter for the storyboard text and that kind of lay-out gives a nice, clean, and catch audience's eyes feeling.

Stop motion inspiration :)

This is really good animation in the real 3D space.

 Good drawing stop motion work

T-shirt War, choose some material you have and make it into your great work!

This is the link have 50 stop motion videos and each of them are really cool.

Brainstorm

This is our group brainstorm

Media is support by the technology, without it we could not do anything for that part of design.
Individual work

I want to apply my skills in my discipline to the development of post production. I came to New Zealand because of when i first time watch The Lord of Ring. I start to think about digital for the future when i was a middle school student. So i love that effect and some visualisation and impression when it come to our eyes. Here are several ideas when the "Post Production" first come in to my mind.
Our clip work just like the Flim making what i have done on the brainstorm, we should give the strong feeling or impression to an audience, then has struck a responsive chord in the hearts of them.
I want my stop motion clip to show media design to be a new way of seeing and show some different expression from reality to fiction.

Curatorial

“Modernism would not have happened without the Rococo” – American ceramicist Adrian Saxe

The first precedent image is the Burnham Pavilion by Zaha Hadid Architects. The pavilion is composed of an intricate curved aluminium structure, with each element shaped and welded in order to create its unique fluid form. “Fabric is both a traditional and a high-tech material whose form is directly related to the forces applied to it – creating beautiful geometries that are never arbitrary. I find this very exciting.” explained Hadid. She uses multiple perspective points and fragmented geometry to create the chaotic fluidity.
The second precedent image is the B32 designed by Marcel Breuer. It was an innovative design in several respects. The significant parts of the chair are the long length of chromed tubular steel. Which provide both the chair’s structure and much of its look. Like the chair, the modern movement in architecture also eliminated moulding and ornament in favour of emphasising the surface finish of materials.
Fluid Forms are everywhere around our environment. This work try to incorporate the main precedent (Burnham Pavilion) and B32. The plastic paper is the project main material, and secondary material is wire and plastic tubing. The plastic paper slice into several parts and make them hold together on straight steel, the black circle switch could change the level. The wire is use to hold the curve but at the same time its hold on the surface. Each curve from the top of plastic is just like the Burnham Pavilion top view, there are separate but at the same time work with together.
